from the Catechism in The Book of Common Prayer:
Q. What is Confirmation?
A. Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment
to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer
and the laying on of hands by a bishop.
Q. What is required of those
to be confirmed?
A. It is required of those to be confirmed that they have been
baptized, are sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith,
are penitent for their sins, and are ready to affirm their confession
of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
Any baptized adult who has not already been confirmed is welcome and encouraged to make this mature profession of faith. (Young people are included, provided they at least have a learner's permit to drive.)
To fulfill the requirment that candidates for Confirmation "are sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith," we are having classes at on various Sundays this Summer at 9:00. This makes it easy for a candidate to attend either the 8:00 or 10:00 liturgy, and attend the class in between. (Regular church attendance is one of the commitments we make in Confirmation.) Classes will be held on the following Sundays:
June 14 - Who are we?
June 21 - Who is Jesus?
June 28 - Who is God?
July 26 - What is the Church?
August 2 - Who are we? redux.
If you miss a session, it is expected that you will contact the Rector and make arrangements for a makeup session prior to the next one.
Confirmation is planned for St. Mary's Day, Sunday, August 16, when Bishop Benfield will be with us.
