Marriage and the Episcopal Church

An Episcopal priest is licensed by the State to function as a civil officer in performing weddings and must conform to all State laws which govern marriage. In addition, there are Canons (laws) of the Church which must be followed.

The policy of the Rector of St. Mary's Parish toward persons who wish to have marriages Celebrated and Blessed here is that one should be active in the life and worship of this Parish for not less than three calendar months before the marriage. In addition, that during this period they receive instruction on the Nature, Meaning and Purpose of Holy Matrimony. Exceptions to this policy will be considered but only for very good cause.

You should allow for enough time for four (4) or more pre-marital sessions with the priest. You will receive instruction as to the Christian doctrine of Marriage, talk about the practical application of that teaching to your marriage and discuss and decide the details of your wedding liturgy.

Following your pre-marital instruction you are required by Canon to sign a Declaration of Intention which testifies to your understanding of the Sacrament of Marriage according to the teaching of The Episcopal Church.

Wedding Policies At St. Mary's Parish:

Since, under normal circumstances, St. Mary's requires ninety (90) day's notice prior to the wedding, the bride and groom should confer with the officiating priest as far in advance as possible. The Parish calendar can be crowded, requiring negotiation of day and time. NO arrangements should be considered final or published until they have been cleared in the office and approved by the officiating priest.

The Rector (or the Curate) normally officiates at all weddings. Should another cleric be involved because of unusual circumstances, that participation must be approved by the Rector. Only Episcopal priests may officiate, other clergy may assist. According to traditional protocol, the Rector will issue the invitation to any other cleric the couple wishes to be involved. The seasons of Advent and Lent are not appropriate times for weddings. The Rector will consider exceptions to this regulation only in extreme circumstances.

The liturgical publishing of banns, while rarely done these days, is an option. Should you wish this done, please make that clear to the priest.

A booklet containing all the Wedding Policies of St. Mary's Parish may be obtained from the parish office.
