If one word could be used to describe this group of Gees, it would be "poor". There are very few Gee marriage records, no Gee wills & most amazingly not one Gee deed for this family in the 50 plus years they lived in Halifax. This has made it very difficult to piece this family together.
The progenitor of this line was Henry Gee (Charles1, Robert2). He enlisted in Company G of Halifax's 14th Virginia Regiment on December 10th, 1776. His company's muster roll shows that Henry was sick at Trenton and Carrell's Ferry in June 1777, in the regimental hospital in July 1777 and at "Morris Town in the Jerseys in guard" in August 1777. This regiment served at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777/8 . By January 1778 Henry is suffering from some sort of illness as the company's muster roll shows him to be sick and in the hospital. This illness was evidently fatal, as the roll lists his date of death as February 6/26, 1778.
Back in Halifax the records show that supplies were furnished to the wife of soldier, Henry Gee, in 1778 and to the widow of Henry Gee in February 1779. In 1780 a suit is brought against Mary Gee, but the case was dismissed by the plaintiff. This was probably for a debt Henry had owed, but seeing that the widow had no means of paying it, the suit was dropped. The 1781 May Court "Ordered that the church wardens of the parish of Antrim in this county do bind out Charles, Elizabeth, Sarah, Robert and Henry Gee, poor orphans of Henry Gee, deceased. Mary Gee never shows up on the Halifax Co. tax lists, which means she not only never owned a slave, but she never even owned a horse.
The birth dates of Henry's children can be estimated by using the order in which they appear in the court order and when the males first appear on the county's property tax lists:
In 1791 Charles (Charles1, Robert2, Henry3) provides the surety for Thomas Seaman's marriage. About a year later, Charles marries Thomas' sister Sarah, daughter of John Seaman. Their children were:
Charles last appears on the tax lists in 1803. He probably died shortly thereafter, as his wife is shown to be a widow in her father's 1814 will. Charles' widow Sarah remarried in 1819 to Elisha Griffin. Charles' daughters both marry their cousins, sons of Thomas Seaman. Elizabeth marries Thomas M. Seaman in 1816 and Sarah marries Jeremiah Seaman in 1818. Thomas M. and Elizabeth had 2 sons:
Anderson and his brother Henry (Charles1, Robert2, Henry3) also both married sisters, but not their cousins. Henry md. Nancy Torian in 1838, but they had no children. Anderson md. 1st Elizabeth Torian, who died in 1841 and md. 2nd the widow Martha Torian Gutherie in 1842. These 3 sisters were all daughters of Andrew Torian and Nancy Blackwell. In 1833 Anderson, Henry and others migrated to the Christian/Trigg Co., Ky. area. Anderson died in Christian Co. 1871/3. The children of Anderson Gee were:
Robert (Charles1, Robert2, Henry3) married 1st Elizabeth Puckett on 29 Jan., 1799 and last appears on the Halifax Tax lists in 1801. In 1802 Robert married 2nd to Elizabeth Waters in Jessamine Co., KY. A family Bible record gives Robert's date of birth as 11 Mar., 1767. He died in Cater Co., KY. in ??. Robert's children were:
