Q: The Godzilla series is quickly approaching its 50th anniversary. What do you feel has kept this series going?
A: Since it lasted more than half a century, I personally think Godzilla already found himself as a type of actor. So the prototype must have a conscious already. In the future, even after my death, Godzilla will still reign. I can't hardly think of the reason why it lasted more than half century but since it has a half century history, Godzilla will live in the near or far future.
Q: Mr. Satsuma mentioned that his relations with Toho have kind of declined since he finished the series. How are your relations with Toho now?
A: I was a contract actor with Toho Companies. All of the time the promotion section of the Toho Company, they always come to me and telling their stories. So unlike Mr. Satsuma, I still have strong ties with Toho Company although I'm not a contracted actor anymore. But I still have strong relations with Toho Company.
We have some questions that came over the Internet from Amsterdam and EURO G-CON. We'll have some questions from European fans. I'm sure you have been asked this a lot: Do you feel that the new technologies of the computer generation, computer graphics, will bring an end to the latex Godzilla men in suits which you are very familiar with?
A: As long as I see the Tri-Star Godzilla, some of the movement looks to me a bit too mechanical. As I said yesterday, I think there are many and various movements or acting by computer that only man can do. So the good combinations of the Tri-Star techniques and suit acting will make the movies far better than the usage of just the suits or just the computer. Mr. Tsuburaya, for example, was the type of the new period who liked new technologies. If he was alive nowadays, he would want some shots or some acting that use computers and definitely he would do that kind of mixture of the monster suits technologies and the computer technologies. I think it's hard to say that the computer would make the monster suits technique obsolete. A good combination of those techniques will make movies better.
Q: Do you have children?
A: I have one daughter.
Q: What does she think about you acting the part of Godzilla and wearing the Godzilla suit?
A: I was in GODZILLA in Toho Company. All shooting sessions are prohibited to the people outside of the company but it was an exception. The teacher of the kindergarten brought the children, including my daughter, to the stage and there, just looking at me in the suit is a good memory as a father. Back in the Osaka Exposition in 1970, I did some Godzilla show and my daughter helped me by picking up the tail of Godzilla. I think my daughter is very proud of her father's job.
Q: Do people notice you and recognize you on the street?
A: I've sometimes found in the streets another actor in some appearance of Godzilla. My face is confined in the suit so he remembers sometimes. 'Are you Mr. Nakajima, the actor?' Yes, but as actor, not as a monster actor.
Q: What was your favorite Godzilla suit of all the movies?
A: With the exception of the very first '54 Godzilla, all the monster suits were order made exclusively for me for my body and body movement so all suits are very easy to act. With one exception: its weight. I am equipped with a huge battery for the motor below the southern part of my body to open the mouth of the Godzilla. With that heaviness as the exception, personally speaking, the current, in Mr. Satsuma's case. All suits were made exclusively for me so with the exception of MONSTER ZERO, which was not made for me. All of the suits are very easy to perform so its very hard to say which one is the best. If you insist, all the suits with the exception of the MONSTER Zero worked best for me.
Q: Do you collect any Godzilla toys or any other Godzilla items?
A: I don't especially collect this type of material but with one exception. A miniature of the Godzilla which I made while in break time while waiting for the takes in the shooting of the GODZILLA'S COUNTER-ATTACK in 1955. Using the same materials as the monster suits of Godzilla (rejects), I made a miniature of Godzilla. This is my only collection of Godzilla.
Q: Could you bring a picture of those models one day?
A: All right.
Q: Other than kaiju-related films, what are your favourite movies?
A: Samurai films are my favorite films. The Kurosawa period. SEVEN SAMURAI, the YOJIMBOS. Samurai films or this period of films are my favorite other than kaiju genre.
Q: What movies do you like from our country?
A: I like all the Frankenstein movies of the era. John Wayne. I like that too. Gary Cooper. Gary Cooper movies. I love these classic horror movies. Number one! NOTE: There is one more question from EURO G-CON which I will place at the end of this transcript for uniformity. It is about the American Godzilla movie.
Q: In late '60's, early '70's Godzilla movies, I noticed Godzilla wiped his mouth a lot. Why did he do that?
A: Up to mid '60's on, the character of Godzilla changed from the symboy of fear to the idol for the children. So this type of treatment was made up to make Godzilla's character much more for the kids. And two days after work I adjusted it to cover the face of the real mouth or real nose of the Godzilla. While my face is here (demonstrates), Godzilla's face is over there so I must cover it and recalculate the difference of the height. Or when he cast the radioactive flames I must recalculate the trajectory of his eye and Godzilla's ions. So it's just treatment mainly for kids.
Q: Do you happen to remember what that script was about decades earlier when Hollywood asked you to be a monster actor?
A: At that time probably the script or story was made already. But since I was just hired, the story was all classified. I was just asked to make a monster film and I didn't exactly know what type of story it was.
From EURO G-CON: What would you have done if you had been offered to help play the part of the Tri-Star Godzilla? What would you have done if you were offered a role in the Tri-Star Godzilla? Would you have taken it?
A: Is that me at this stage or me in younger age in Toho Studios?
Today.
A: As I said, I am an actor so if I was asked I would do anything. You mentioned Godzilla but my personal interest is the role of the general. It is more suitable for me for the Tri-Star movie. I could tell them, 'It's not Godzilla'.
