How to Participate

The tests for the Cooper Surname DNA Project are done by Family Tree DNA of Houston, Texas.  You may contact them directly to find out what services they offer, and to sign up for a test.  They have a large number of registered surname groups which receive some special data handling and a lower prices.  There are three ways to join the Cooper group, the first below is recommended by the project administrator.  Payment may be by credit card at the time the kit is requested or by check returned with the sample.

       (1)  If you make a decision to participate, which I hope you do, you can use the following link to join the project, purchase your DNA test and become a member of the group automatically.

          (2)  Go to http://www.familytreedna.com find the page for the Cooper Surname Project, and follow the instructions.  In this instance, the Surname Project signup is a two-step process which includes the administrator as the go-between and allows him some control over who joins their group.  The extra step is not a great inconvenience.  You will be required to supply the needed information (name, address, country, phone number, email address, etc.), so he can make the kit request.

          (3)  You can email the Group Administrator, Hiram "Ben" Cooper at bcooper@mc2k.com to get more detailed information.  Again, you will be required to supply needed information (name, address, country, phone number, email address, etc.), so he can make the kit request.

There are fourteen Y-chromosome test kits offered for male Cooper participants:
    * There is an extra charge for shipping of approximately $2.00.

Once the application is received, Family Tree DNA will send a kit to the designated address.

Family Tree DNA Test Kit

The Family Tree DNA test kit consists of two cheek scrapers and two collection tubes---designed for a single persons use. Each tube contains a fluid designed to arrest bacteria growth, so you can scrape your cheek and return your kit in any type of weather (hot or cold). The freshness of your sample will remain intact for months.

The prior collection standard of the industry was the dry preservation method, which worked without the fluid, but in humid climates, was prone to bacteria growth on the scraper tip. FTDNA enjoys an international clientele; therefore, we have chosen to use a universal collection kit.

You will notice the cotton 'toothed' tip at the end of the scraper. The sensation of using our scraper is like brushing your inside cheek with your toothbrush. Remember, a good scrape produces lots of DNA, which makes the extraction process easier and decreases the chance that one or more of your markers will fail to be readable on the first test of your sample.

Your kit also includes instructions for collecting your DNA sample (available in many languages) and the all important Release Form. The Release Form is your written consent that allows FTDNA to share your name and email address with someone who matches your genetic fingerprint exactly.

We call these matches "Genetic Cousins ™", and they represent one of the most exciting parts of the Family Tree DNA system!

If you are worried about what else the DNA test lab might find, the answer is nothing. They will not know if you show positive for a disease, condition or anything else. The test looks only at the Y-Chromosome and then only at 12 to 59 specific Loci on the Y-Chromosome.

General Fund

Contributions can now be made to the General Fund of a the Cooper Surname Project "in memory of" or "in honor of" a specific person.  On the page where you can make a donation, you can enter a person's name.

Each Surname Project has a General Fund, which is a terrific tool for others to contribute to the cost of testing, so that the Surname Project can sponsor all or a portion of the cost of a DNA test for those who can not afford to participate.  Anyone can contribute to the General Fund, which is administered by the Group Administrator.  The funds are contributed directly to Family Tree DNA.  Upon receipt, these funds are posted to the Surname Projects General Fund.

The Group Administrator has a selection on their Group Administrator Page called General Fund. Clicking on this selection will show all the transactions for the General Fund for the Surname Project. The transactions shown will be funds received by Family Tree DNA for the Surname Project General Fund and fund expenditures. Family Tree DNA accepts funds by check, credit card or PayPal. Checks must be in US Dollars only. PayPal transactions must be to info@familytreeDNA.com, and please specify the Cooper Surname General Fund in each case.

The General Fund provides an opportunity for Group Administrators to raise sponsorship funds in any currency by the sponsors using the credit card payment feature to handle the currency conversion. In addition, sponsors may feel more comfortable making their sponsorship contribution directly to Family Tree DNA. This feature could increase the sponsorship funds raised.

To make a contribution to the General Fund, please click on the link below and designate your donation is for the Cooper Surname Project.
