Sharing Family History
Introduction
Members of the Male Cooper DNA Group in the furtherance of family history research have chosen to share the information on their family trees with other members of the Group. This is not a requisite to become involved in the Group, it is strictly a voluntary matter. No particular order has been ascertained with the entries, except for a first come, first entered. There will be an effort to keep participants with matching DNA markers together.

Fleet Cooper Sr. was allegedly born in Philadelphia 1721; moved with his family to Isle of Wright Co., VA in 1725; spent his youth in Loudoun County where he married in 1747 a Marguerite Coore. On 21 January 1764 he was a resident of Dobbs Co., N.C. where he bought 100-acres on Great Coharie in Duplin County. He was 17th of 21 signers of the Duplin County Oath of Allegiance and Abjuration passed by the General Assembly at New Bern, November 1777. The Governor appointed 12-men as Justices of the newly formed county of Sampson, including Fleet Cooper. On April 20, 1776, he enlisted in the Revolutionary War and was given an honorable discharge 2 1/2 years later. Rev. Fleet Cooper was an advocate for the doctrines of the cross in the Baptist church for fifty years.
Fleet Cooper Jr. was born in Duplin Co., NC., and a farmer, and a minister for 50-years. He was pastor of Coharie Rowan Baptist Church from 1785 to 1786. He and his father owned large acreages and resided about one mile south of the Concord School on the Clinton-Roseboro highway, and there they are both buried in graves practically forgotten, for they are now being plowed over. He was a chaplain in the Revolutionary War.
Daniel Cooper was born and died in Sampson Co., NC., and a farmer. He married Zilpah Stevens in 1812 in Sampson Co. and had seven children, four boys and three girls.
Hiram B. Cooper was born in Sampson Co., NC, and died a prisoner of war in Elmira Prison Camp, Elmira, NY, from unknown causes and is buried in the Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira. He left one child by his first marriage to Mary J. Spell, Abner T. Cooper, who was raised by the Spell family. He left four children the youngest less than three months of age by his second marriage to Elizabeth E. Smith. Shortly after his death Elizabeth and their four children migrated to Yell Co., AR and then on into Peaster, Parker Co., Texas. While in AR she gave birth to two Smith children, Charles A. & Charity E. Smith. Census records and other information indicate Elizabeth lived the remaining years of her life with her brother in Parker Co., TX and daughter, Charity "Chillie" E. (Smith) Maxwell in Dallas, Dallas Co., TX. Elizabeth passed away at the age of 89 in 1928 presumably in Dallas County, TX but her burial place is unknown.
George T. Cooper was born in Sampson Co., NC, and died and is buried in Peaster, Parker Co., TX. He was a public school teacher and farmer and died a day or two after being stabbed and beaten by one of his 13-year students. He was survived by eight children by his first wife and two children by his second wife.
Hiram B. Cooper was born in Peaster Co., TX., and died in Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., OK and is buried in Tecumseh "Mission" Cemetery, Tecumseh, Pottawatomie Co., OK, at the age of forty-seven. He was the youngest of three sons of his father and first wife. He married Lola Mae Allen, November 7, 1933 in Ada, Pontotoc Co., OK.
Hiram B. Cooper Jr. was born in Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., OK. He married Wanda Faye Wimberley, March 31, 1957 in Waynesville, Pulaski Co., MO.

Joseph Cooper b. ca 1795 d. after 1860 Came as a very small child to Claiborne Co., TN likely from Greenbrier Co., WV. Married and his farm was on the Powell River in the Head Of The Horse Hollow. In Feb 1834 while living in Knox Co., KY sold his holdings in Claiborne Co., TN. By 1835 he was living in Harlan Co., KY on Yellow Creek, in what is now Bell Co., KY and was then living in Pulaski Co., KY by the 1850 Census.
Others Cooper's living in Pulaski County do not match this Y-DNA profile.
In the 1850 US Census, Kentucky, County Pulaski, Division N2, call No. M432/217, page 129, Dwelling 789, Family 789, show a Joseph Cooper age 53 male white farmer real estate 400, born VA, can't read or write; Elizabeth age 53 female white born VA, can't read or write; Archibald age 17 male white born KY; Sterling age 13 male white born KY, school; within a year Daniel age 10 male white born KY, school; within a year Henry age 8 male white born KY; and Armilda age 6 female white born KY.
The family moved to Putnam Co., Indiana in1852 and is listed in the 1860 Census. Joseph’s sons, Archibald, Sterling Harrison and Daniel Cooper, all severed in the Union Army from Indiana. After the war Archibald moves his family to Delaware Co., IN, Sterling moves his family to Oklahoma and Kansas. Daniel remains in the Putnam County Indiana area and is my direct ancestor. Nothing is known of Henry Cooper or Armilda Cooper but Armilda could be the Ferraby Cooper listed in the 1860 Census of Putnam Co., IN in Joseph's household. Henry may have died at an early age, a unknown.

*Please note: These two could possibly be the same person; however, marriage record in 1822 (Bracken Co., KY) says he is 21; census records show two men of this name in 1840 census in Nicholas Co. KY (adjoined Bracken Co. at that time); this William Bailey Cooper also appears on several census records from 1850 on in Robertson Co. (formed from Bracken and Nicholas Counties) with birth dates from 1790 to 1801. Recently discovered newspaper article from Nicholas Co., KY says he was born in Stafford Co., VA, this date.
Note on first William Bailey Cooper: Recently found newspaper clipping from Carlisle, Mercury Sept. 11, 1879: Mt. Olivet News [currently in Robertson Co. formed from Nicholas and Bracken]
"Uncle Baily Cooper, of this county, is nearly ninety-seven years of age, was born in Stafford County, VA., January 20, 1783. when quite a young man he emigrated to Kentucky and settled on Lawrence Creek, Mason County. He raised a large family of boys, some of them have grayer heads than their father, and look quite as old. The old man is still hale and hearty, made a hand in the harvest field quite recently, and never was sick in his life, don't know what the headache is. He prefers a bowl of sour milk for breakfast in preference to coffee or tea, has chewed tobacco moderately all his life, and takes a dram when he can get it. He never had any education and is quite a poor man. He can make a good basket and was in town the other day soliciting orders in that line. He says he was in his prime at fifty years of age, and never was whipped by any one. He was well acquainted with Simon Kenton and other pioneers of Kentucky, and remembers well when Washington died in 1799."
Also, another newspaper article published 7 Feb 1884 in Mt. Olivet, Robertson County, KY states: "Old Bailey Cooper who was widely known in this section, died in this county on 5th inst., at advanced age. Deceased was at various times an inmate of the county poorhouse. He was one of the few remaining survivors of the War of 1812 in Robertson county."

David Cooper is said by other genealogists to be the son of Marcome
Cooper of Warwickshire, England. His wife is presumed to be Elizabeth Wilder.
David Cooper's will dated 17 March 1792 and found in Box 7, Packet 15,
Spartanburg, SC, names his wife Elizabeth and their ten children as his
heirs. His son "Malleki" (sic) was named as his executor.
John Cotton Cooper, was born in Spartanburg, SC in 1758. He is found
in land transactions in Kentucky in the early 1800s, along with those of
several involving his sons. His will signed 1 April 1829 in Monroe Co., MS
names his wife Nancy, "otherwise Arnold", and his fourteen children.
Cader Cooper was the youngest of John and Nancy's children, born 1796,
according to his son's Bible, in probably Thickety, Spartanburg, SC. Why he
left SC for KY is not entirely known, but from historical context one might
surmise it was due to land development in the frontier region. From land
records in Christian Co., KY, we find that Cader owned land "to the state
line" in the south western part of the county. On 25 December 1816 he
married Sarah Byars, daughter of Stripling Byars. Twelve children were born
to this union. By 1823 we find Cader purchasing a land grant in Jefferson
Co., AL. More were added in 1824. In 1830 his son Sylvester was born in
Jefferson County, AL.
Sylvester Cooper married Amy Harriet "Hattie" Marshall, also from
Jefferson Co., AL about 1850. Both of her parents had come from NC.
Sylvester was a farmer, and was apparently following his grandfather's trail
west, when in 1854 his son Cornelius (first name John) was born in Chickasaw
Co., MS. Six of their seven children were already born when Sylvester took
up arms for the Confederacy and fought with his local unit, the Buena Vista
Rifles. He fought valiantly across both sides of the Mason-Dixon line, but
was minus a leg when he returned to his family. That didn't stop him,
though. By 1870 he had loaded his family to begin their trek to Texas. His
last son was born in 1871 in McDade Co., on the way. His final destination
was DeWitt Co., TX, where he farmed until his death. He and Hattie are buried
in the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery in northeast DeWitt County, TX.
John Cornelius Cooper was a farmer and a blacksmith in DeWitt Co. TX.
He married first Elizabeth Tankersley about 1875 in the Burns Station
community, outside of Cuero. David Cooper was born to this union in 1876.
Sometime before 1890 Elizabeth died, and about 1890 Cornelius married
Nicholena King, who was called Lena. Lena's sister, Fannie, married George
Chisholm of the Chisholm Trail. Cornelius died in 1935 and is buried in the
Old Clinton Cemetery in DeWitt County.
Monroe Cornelius Cooper was born in 1891. He married Emma Scogin,
from Hopkins Co. TX, in Cuero, DeWitt Co., TX on 23 August 1913. They farmed
in the Verhelle area of DeWitt County. They are buried in Memory Gardens
Cemetery in Cuero.
Winston "Pete" Cooper was born 26 June 1920 in DeWitt Co., TX. Having
no middle initial, he assumed the name of Pete, which stuff with him
thereafter. He married Ethel R. Avants on 1 March 1942. While Pete was busy
storming the beach at Normandy on D-Day 1944, Ethel was back home, busy giving
birth to their second child and first son. Pete sustained injuries in the
War, which earned him a Purple Heart, and the inoperable shrapnel remained
lodged dangerously close to his spine for the rest of his life. Pete died in
November of 1998 from complications of emphysema. Ethel followed him in June
of 1999, after a battle of her own with breast cancer. They are both buried
in the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery in DeWitt County, TX
Winston "Glen" Cooper was born in Yoakum, Lavaca Co., TX on the 6th of
June 1944. He married Nancy Jo Bray in Falfurrias, Brooks Co., TX on 12 June
1964.

Lloyd George Cooper (1923 OK - Living)
George B. Cooper was born December 14, 1782 somewhere in Virginia. The first official record found shows him in Pulaski County, KY. in 1812. His name appears on the 1812 tax rolls with Margaret who I believe was his mother. Margaret’s name appears on the 1809 tax rolls as widow of William. In 1818 and 1819 KY land records show that George B bought land-adjoining land owned by Margaret Cooper. In two separate books on the history of Pulaski County Kentucky George B Cooper is listed as a member of the Kentucky Legislature from Pulaski County in 1819, 1820 and 1821. The 1820 KY census show George B was the owner of four slaves; his 1861 will also mentions his slaves. He married Susannah Hancock Lee, born September 1, 1798 in Nominy, Westmoreland County, Virginia, a 5th cousin of Robert E Lee. Their marriage bond was issued in Pulaski County, KY December 10, 1822. They had 10 children. Also in the History of Pulaski County George B is listed as an elder and in charge of the finances of the Pisgah Presbyterian church. I have assumed from that and other information George B was somewhat educated for his time. In about 1832 or 1833 the family moved to Lincoln County KY. George B Cooper died January 31, 1861 in Lincoln County and was according to his will, was “discreetly buried in my family burying ground in my apple orchard with my deceased children.”
Joseph C Cooper was born in Pulaski County, KY in 1830 he was the fourth of ten children born to George B. and Susannah Cooper. He is listed in the subsequent census with the family near Hustonville, in Lincoln County, KY. In his father’s January 1861 will Joseph C was named to superintend the family farms for his mother and sisters. One of his jobs was to have control of the slaves. On October 9, 1861 Private Joseph C, Cooper age 31 mustered into the 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, Company A, in Lincoln County KY. Joseph C married Camillia Frances Floyd in Knox County Tennessee on March 1, 1864. In the 1870, census Millie and Joseph were living in Lincoln County Kentucky in the Highland Precinct, across the county from Hustonville, his home in 1861. They had three children Floyd 5, born 1865 in Illinois, Walter 3 born 1867 in Tennessee, and Fannie 1, born 1869 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. In spite of the hardship of travel the family obviously moved often. My Grandfather, John Marshall Cooper was born in a covered wagon July 10, 1872 in Salina, Kansas. The story is that his parents were with a wagon train on the way to from Kentucky to Oregon or maybe California. Because of his birth, they dropped out of the wagon train. They eventually turned south and settled in Collin Co, Texas. Joseph C Cooper died probably in 1879 when my grandfather John Marshall Cooper was 6 years old.
John Marshall Cooper grew up on a farm on Collin County and later Cooke County, Texas. Both these counties are in North Texas. In 1889, at the age of 16 John M rode his horse to Guthrie, Indian Territory (now OK) to try and acquire land in the Land Run, He was unsuccessful and rode back to Texas. He spent the night at a stage stop owned by a Mr. Birch, in White Bead, Indian Territory (now OK). In 1894 he migrated with his mother Camillia, brother George Floyd and sister Fannie to the Washita River Valley in Indian Territory (now OK). John farmed 1200 acres for Mr. Birch in Neil Switch (near Lindsay). Camillia & Fannie ran a boarding house in Paul's Valley. Dolly Woodward and her mother Jenny Thompson Woodward worked in the boarding house. Jenny and Dolly moved to Neil Switch to keep house for John and his farm hands. John and Dolly married in 1903. They had 13 children. My Mother Lela Florene Cooper, #3 and the first daughter was born February 21, 1907 in Neil Switch. The family moved to Maysville, OK in June 1907. My uncle Lloyd George Cooper was #8, fourth son.

WILLIAM COOPER: The first appearance for William Cooper, husband
of Mary Harrison, in Granville County, NC, was the acquisition of a tract of
land on Nutbush Creek in 1765. William Cooper owned property on Nutbush Creek
from October 19, 1765 until January 17, 1775. [Granville County Deed Records]
William reported that "when Daniel Boone was exploring Kentucky he was with
him...when the Kentucky lines were marked out, he was one of the number, though
his name is spelt Cook." [J. W. Cooper letter of August 14, 1856, to son
(William King Cooper)] Some historical publications identify a William Cook or
a William Coole with Daniel Boone in 1769, when D. Boone made his first trip to
KY with John Findley and others. William Cooper, husband of Mary Harrison,
probably was the William Cooper who planted the first corn crop in the
Clover bottom on Otter Creek, near Fort Boonesboro, KY, in 1775 or 1776. In 1780
and 1781, that William Cooper was granted title to three (3) tracts totaling
2,400 acres on the left hand fork of Otter Creek. Otter Creek is a tributary of
the Kentucky River and lies in present day Madison County, KY, near the town of
Richmond. William Cooper claimed he fought at the battle of Guilford Courthouse,
March 15, 1781 and in other revolutionary war battles. [Letter of Aug. 14,
1856] One researcher has reported that when the James Harrison family moved to
SC after the Revolutionary War, William Cooper and Mary "Polly" Harrison Cooper
moved with them to the Harrison plantation at Fairforest and continued to live
there until Harrison sold the plantation in 1790.
JOHN COOPER was born about 1763 in Granville County, NC, and
sometime after the American Revolution, moved with his family to Union District,
SC. Some researchers have reported that John Cooper's brother, Elijah Harrison
Cooper, moved to Union District at an earlier date along with his Uncle John
Harrison and his family. John Cooper married about 1791 in Union District, SC,
to Abigail Bobo, the daughter of Lewis Bobo and Sarah Solomon. In 1796, Lewis &
Sarah Bobo conveyed a 100 acre tract to John Cooper for the consideration of 50
pounds Sterling. One of the witnesses to the deed was a Samuel Simpson. [Union
Dist., SC Deed Book G, pages 287-289] Probably, shortly after that transaction,
John Cooper, along with other families from Union District, moved to Kentucky.*
John Cooper appears on the 1806, 1807 & 1808 Tax Lists for Livingston County,
KY. John Cooper's daughter, Mary Rhodes Cooper, reported that she was married by
James Hatters, a Minister of the Gospel, at Eddyville on April 23, 1808, to
Benjamin Hammond. (Bounty Land Claim No. 263.434, dated September 15, 1856).
Benjamin Hammond is also shown on the 1806, 1807 & 1808 Tax Lists for Livingston
County. The original town of Eddyville, KY, was on the bank of the Cumberland
River.
In about 1810, John Cooper and his family moved to Feliciana Parish, Louisiana,
where both he and Benjamin Hammond established land claims near the
Louisiana-Mississippi border. In 1812, John Cooper established a 589 61/100 acre
land claim in Section 65, T1S-R1E. The north line of Section 65 is on the
southern boundary line of Wilkinson County, MS. Section 65 is also adjacent to
Section 72, which was claimed by Benjamin Hammond in 1810. John Cooper's
daughter, Sarah D. Cooper, married Samuel Simpson on March 15, 1814, in
Wilkinson County, MS. While residing in Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, both
Warren H. Cooper, son of John & Abigail Cooper, and Benjamin Hammond joined with
the local militia and fought in the Battle of New Orleans.
Sometime in 1815, the John Cooper family moved to Marion County, MS and settled
near the present day town of Columbia, MS. On September 1, 1815, John Cooper and
son, Warren Cooper, signed a Petition to Congress along with other inhabitants
of the Mississippi Territory East of the Pearl River. On September 12, 1821,
John Cooper acquired a claim of 230 25/100 acres of land in fractional Section
24, T4N-R13E, on the bank of the Pearl River, where he apparently lived for
several years. The Benjamin Hammond family also moved to Marion County. Many of
the descendants of the Hammond family still live in Marion County, MS.
The last information available for Abigail Bobo Cooper was in 1824, when she
appeared as a witness in the divorce of her daughter, Catherine Cooper Oliver,
from Charles B. Oliver. On January 24, 1831, John Cooper made a gift of various
household goods and livestock to his daughter, Catherine Cooper Willoughby, wife
of Rudolphus Willoughby. [Marion County, MS, Deed Book B, Page 369] He may have
been living with the Willoughby family at that time. In 1840, John Cooper
probably was living with the Benjamin Hammond family. [1840 Census, Marion
County, MS] In 1850, John Cooper, age 87, was living with his son, William D.
Cooper. [1850 Census, Marion County, MS page 189 (B)] No information on John
Cooper has been reported after that date.
*The path of the Cooper family may have been similar to that of the George
Gordon family detailed in the publication, The Gordon's of the Deep South,
Ermine Northcutt Marshall, (1961), wherein at page 45 it is stated that the
Gordon family departed from Union County, SC, in 1796 for Kentucky where George
Gordon received two (2) land grants in Christian County. The part of Christian
County where the Gordon's settled later became Livingston Co. Sometime before
1813, the George Gordon family moved from Kentucky to St. Helena Parish, LA.

Samuel Cooper was born in NC according to all census reports but spent 30 plus years in Wayne County TN before relocating to Searcy County AR in
1853 where several of his sons and a daughter had moved earlier. Census shows Samuel and his sons in Searcy, Izard and Independence counties over the next few years. Elizabeth, Samuel's wife was possibly a Ross but not the one that many internet trees show. She was not the sister of Chief John Ross, I found that Elizabeth Ross buried in Tahlequah, Ok next to her husband and Chief John.
John Calvin Cooper was born in Wayne County TN and with his wife Elizabeth Ellen moved to Izard County, AR between 1846 and 1850.both died after 1870 census.
Marion Cooper was born in Wayne County TN, coming to AR with his parents as a child. His wife Sarah (Sally) George also came to AR with her parents. Marion, Sarah and five of their children are buried in Lunenburg, AR. They all died of TB after 1900 census and before 1910.
George T. Cooper had left home prior to these deaths and lived in Izard County AR until his death in 1950.

My Cooper Ancestors
by
Ellis T. Cooper Jr.
December 11, 2006
In recent times, I have had my DNA tested and find that I match with Roger Keefer of South Carolina who died in Feb 2006. I believe his ancestor may have been Frederick, possibly a brother to my George Keefer/Cooper described in this message. He changed his name from Keefer to Cooper in 1777 at Frederick, Maryland. If anyone has info about George parents and his brother, I would appreciate receiving any info available.
My father was Ellis Cooper, Sr. born 1902 near Louisburg, Kansas. His parents were Edwin Rinehart Cooper and Sarah Gertrude Offutt Cooper. They had five sons: Vernon, Kenneth, Ellis, Edwin and Jess Cooper. Edwin’s ancestors were James Ellis Cooper and Elizabeth Heffelbauer Cooper who were married in Capon Bridge W. Va. James and Elizabeth had sons Herbert, Edwin and Donald, daughters Blanche, Emma and Anna who died at a young age @16.
James Ellis Cooper parents were Jacob Cooper and Anna Park Cooper. Jacob was born Nov 10, 1799 near Capon Bridge W. VA. He is buried I the Lovett Cemetery near Capon Bridge. Jacob had brothers Evan Park Cooper, Lycurgus Cooper and Asa Cooper. Their daughter was Martha Ann.
Jacobs’s parents were John Cooper and Mary Magdalena Rinehart Cooper. They had children as follows: Jacob, Joel, Samuel, Solomon, Amos and daughter Amy.
John’s parents were George Kueffer/Kieffer/Keefer who changed his name to Cooper in 1777 in Frederick, MD. He married Marry Ruckman and in 1791 or 1792 migrated to Hampshire County VA. Now. W.VA. He and his family became owners of several hundred acres of land today called Coopers Mountain. George and several of his family members are buried there, is daughter Elizabeth married Jacob Millslagle and his daughter Catherine married Jacob Ruckman. George had sons John, Adam and Christian and daughters Elizabeth and Catherine who was known as Cathy.
I have George being born in 1729 in Switzerland, his brother Rudolph was born in 1727 and sisters, Elizabeth b. 1731 and Katrina b. 1733 all born in Switzerland. They left Switzerland in 1734 but did not arrive in America until mid 1750s. Most of the Swiss connection was developed by a grandson of Evan Park Cooper by the name of Norman Emerick of Baltimore, MD. Norman is now deceased or no longer has his faculties abut hm. Norman developed that George his siblings were the children of Hans Dubendorffer Kueffer b. 1701 and Lisbeth Keller. Hans was from in Dubendorf thus the name Dubendorffer. This info is contained in the book titled LIST OF SWISS EMIGRANTS IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY TO THE AMERICAN COLONIES, by ALBERT BERNHARDT FAUST; AB, PhD AND GAIUS MARCUS BRUMBAUGH; MS and MD. This was published 1972 with much of the Swiss information coming from the archives of Switzerland.
Why George changed his name to Cooper, we have not been able to ascertain. How my DNA matched with H. Roger Keefer, I can only speculate that George brother Rudolph was an ancestor of H. Roger Keefer.
This is the way I have it. If not accurate, it is because I have been misinformed some where along the way.
We are sure of the accuracy back to and including George but beyond that we are not positive. If anyone can correct me, please do so.
Ellis Cooper, Jr.
The list above is a proven list back to my furthest known ancestor back in time.
My 25-Marker Test reveals that my Cooper-line is the same Cooper-line of James Fenimore Cooper, although not directly. My oldest known ancestor is older than JFC.
Isaac is shown in the tax records of Bladen County, NC in 1763 and went on to Wrightsboro GA about 1770. They left the Quaker colony about 1805 and passed through TN and on to Ohio.
Benjamin went on to IN and Joel settled in Putnam County In about 1830.
Joel Sanders was married five times, was an assistant surgeon at Cumberland Gap during the civil war, lived in IN, MO, then back to IN and chose to die in Kansas City, MO. He is buried with his third wife.
Eugene R. married Lucy at her father's home in El Paso TX , in 1920 they drove from St Paul MN to El Paso TX in a Stearns Knight touring car camping along the way.
My father Eugene Jr. was but 18 months old at the time and his grandmother Christine's mother Julia Carroll was along at the age of 79. It was quite the experience. Eugene Jr. became a draftsman for Allison Division at General Motors despite only an 8th grade education and was named on several patents from work on the Turbo-prop engines they produced.
I was born in Boone County, IN, served 7-yrs in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and am now retired from several jobs in electronics.
